An instant classic for any fan of alternate history who finds Turtledove's approach to the butterfly effect to be at best lazy and worst non existant. Not a conventional narrative, but a study of a world much different than ours; However if our history was written in similar style no teacher or professor would complain of unread matrial again. His focus is really on presenting historical events as they have informed popular perceptions in the timeline under study, and how those perceptions in turn form events and create new history. Incredibly engaging for fans of such works, especially those disappointed with the typically small scale of changes many authors use in the genre.Tags : Diverge and Conquer (Look to the West) (Volume 1) [Tom Anderson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Diverge and Conquer Look to the West Volume 1 Tom Anderson 9781533404305 Books Reviews
A tour de force of alternate history writings, as excerpts from history books in the alternate timeline, framed by explorers from our history reviewing the alternate one. Only flaw (costing it a fifth star) is an implausible number of "alternate siblings" of historical figures born years or even decades after the Point of Divergence in 1727.
There is no dialogue, no plot. Supposedly, one is reading historical dissertations on an alternate history, however, it's merely an endless succession of "this happened" followed by "that happened". Much of the reasoning behind the divergence in timelines is, in a word, flawed. Understanding human motivations is necessary when crafting fictional events and their underlying causes, but that understanding is missing here. I feel cheated by the price of this book and the time devoted to searching for the good book promised by previous (family members?) reviewers who glowingly praised this ... book.
If your favourite part of an alternative history novel is the the auther's world building notes; then this book is for you.
Otherwise, probably not.
Great book, really enjoyed it, on e of the best AH stories i'be read
One of the best alternative histories I have read in some time.
I am not even halfway through Diverge and Conquer, but I can already say that I love it! This is a fascinating alternate history! I love the way Mr. Anderson goes into detail about not just military or political history, but weaves in scientific and cultural aspects of history and even discusses the alternate historiography of this universe. From one minor point of divergence, the book expands to explore the vast changes to the world in incredible detail. I can't wait to finish it and eagerly await the next books!
This book is huge. Not just in number of pages, but historical content. This is alternate history done right. Big. Broad in scope. Global in nature. Ah, here is another word Robust. Full marks for the author, and I can't tell you how much I look forward to his next offering. Bravo!
